Siena, 1 luglio 2017 - If you go to Siena anyone knows what Palio is, and you who are visiting this beautiful and historical city, do you know it? Twice a year, on July 2nd and on August 16th, the main square, Piazza del Campo, becomes the centre of the world and of the enthusiasm of the entire city: it is the most famous equestrian race all over the world, during which 10 out of 17 historical Contradas of the city face each other.

The mechanism to select them is simple: seven contradas are those that didn’t run during the race of the previous year while the other three ones are chosen by random lots. The race lasts three turns around the racetrack. The Contradas challenge each other passionately to conquer the «Drappellone», the commemorative banner, based on an ancient agreement.

It could be useful to follow a few simple cautionary rules to enjoy the Palio in the safest way possible, especially in current time marked by the threat of terrorism. Indeed, this year it is necessary to add some new rules to the usual ones in order to avoid risky situations. First of all, July and August are two really hot months in Italy, so the keyword is water, but do not forget that glass bottles or other metal containers are not allowed in the square. Some other forbidden items in the Piazza are wheelchairs and prams.

Obviously, also chairs, stools, tables, benches and all the other big objects that would cause practical problems. Unfortunately, your furry friends cannot enjoy this great horserace because they cannot enter the square. Referring to the animals, remember not to disturb the horses during the whole event, as well as the jockeys. Do respect the other viewers, especially the “Contradaioli” (the Contradas supporter): Palio is a festive occasion for everybody, but it is a tradition for Sienese people. And now, here we are to the new rules linked with the terrorism risk.

The entrances will be closed earlier than usual, at 6.15 p.m., so to limit the number of viewers in the square up to 12 thousands; children under 12 are not allowed in the square; alcoholic drinks are forbidden. Regarding the cutting edge technologies, drones are not allowed in piazza del Campo. To guarantee a Palio as safe as possible, police sniper will be on the roofs of the buildings around the square to keep an eye on the entire area. In case of emergency some ambulances will be parked very close to the entrances of the square.

Let’s jump right in the competition. This year it will be necessary to pay attention to rival Contradas like Pantera/Aquila, Leocorno/Civetta. In addition the Contrada of Onda recognizes the Contrada of Torre as its rival even if this one denies the antagonism. So, the competition is going to be a thrilling race this year. We wish you an unforgettable experience. Enjoy the Palio at its best.
